How Cat Reacts to Snow Coming Through Window Melts Hearts: ‘Core Memory’

A simple moment between a cat and the falling snow has captured the internet’s attention, turning an everyday winter scene into a viral sensation.

A short Instagram video shared on Friday under the username @lili.und.lulu shows a black cat experiencing snow in a way that viewers quickly found impossible to resist.

In the video, the cat’s owner gently holds the kitty up to an open window as snow drifts inside. Small flakes float through the air, landing just within reach of the curious feline.

Unsure of what is happening, the black cat carefully watches the snow, eyes focused and body alert, as if trying to understand this unfamiliar event.

At one point, the cat attempts to grab the snow as it falls, reaching out with its paws while continuing to observe the scene closely. The reaction appears cautious but full of wonder, capturing a quiet, almost magical moment.

Cats generally do not like snow, although reactions vary depending on the individual cat, its breed, and its experience. Most domestic cats prefer warm, dry environments because their ancestors evolved in desert climates, making cold and wet conditions uncomfortable. As a result, many cats avoid snow and seek warmth indoors.

However, some cats—especially those with thick, insulating fur like Maine Coons or Norwegian Forest cats—can tolerate and even enjoy playing in snow. For these cats, snow can be a novel and stimulating experience, particularly if they encounter it for the first time. Still, enjoyment is usually temporary, and even cold-adapted cats will eventually look for warmth.

Overall, there is no universal answer: some cats are curious or playful in snow, while others dislike it entirely.

Owners should never force exposure and must ensure safety, as cold conditions can lead to issues like hypothermia, discomfort, or paw irritation if cats stay outside too long.

The video quickly spread across social media after being posted. As of now, it has received more than 4.5 million views and 357,000 likes on Instagram.
