Plaintiff and dancer Maren Wade claims that Taylor Swift's album title and branding bear many similarities to the "Confessions of a Showgirl" label she has used since 2014.
American country singer Taylor Swift is facing a lawsuit alleging trademark infringement related to her 12th album, "The Life of a Showgirl," set to be released in 2025.
In a lawsuit filed in federal court in California on March 30, the plaintiff, dancer Maren Wade (legal name Maren Flagg), alleges that Taylor Swift's album title and branding bear a striking resemblance to the "Confessions of a Showgirl" label she used in 2014 for a newspaper article, which later evolved into a nationwide touring performance.
According to the dancer, the similarity in the use of the term "Showgirl" and related activities has caused a "reverse confusion," especially since Taylor Swift's overwhelming influence could lead the public to mistakenly believe Wade's pre-existing brand is a copycat product.
The lawsuit also states that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) previously refused to grant trademark registration for “Life of a Showgirl” due to concerns about potential confusion with existing trademarks, including “Confessions of a Showgirl.”
However, Taylor Swift's team continues to use this name in the release, promotion, and sale of related products.
In addition to Taylor Swift, the lawsuit also names the singer's trademark management companies, record labels, and product sales divisions as defendants.
Dancer Maren Wade is asking the court to issue a permanent injunction prohibiting the use of her name and image in connection with “The Life of a Showgirl,” and is also seeking financial damages, including any profits generated from the exploitation of her brand.
The album “The Life of a Showgirl” is Taylor Swift's 12th studio album, released in October 2025 and selling approximately 4 million copies in its first week. The album's promotional materials utilize a Las Vegas cabaret style, with the signature “showgirl” attire appearing throughout.
Taylor Swift's representatives have declined to comment on the matter.
